Asia-Pacific Science, Technology and Society Network (APSTSN) Biennial Conference 2013 Knowing, Making, Governing This conference is hosted by Tembusu College with support from the Asia Research Institute, National University Singapore The National University of Singapore is pleased to open the Call for Papers for APSTSN’s Biennial Conference 2013. The Asia-Pacific Science, Technology and Society Network is an association of regional scholars for fostering collaboration and encouraging science, technology and society research, teaching, and critical discussion on current STS themes and issues in the Asia-Pacific region. The conference will be held on 15-17 July 2013.
Knowing, Making, Governing - across Asia and the Pacific, the work of science, technology and society calls attention to the region’s plurality of socio-technical projects and ways of knowing. The conference accepts proposals for all themes pertaining to science, technology and society, including:
This conference is jointly organized by the STS Research Cluster of the Asia Research Institute (ARI), the STS Research Cluster of the Faculty or Arts and Social Sciences (FASS), and Tembusu College (at University Town), all at the National University of Singapore (NUS). Support has also been received from the Humanities and Social Science Research Fund at NUS.
SUBMISSION OF PROPOSALS Deadline for submitting proposals is January 7, 2013. Proposals will be reviewed by the NUS Conference Organizing Committee, with the objective to accept all properly prepared proposals. Please note that Science, Technology and Society (STS) is a broad but distinct inter-disciplinary field pertaining to science, technology and their historical and social implications and conditions of possibility. Proposals to present non-STS research cannot be entertained.
Participants can submit any of four kinds of proposals for consideration:
1. Complete Panels organized by the participants are strongly encouraged. Panel organizers should secure the involvement of desired participants and submit a complete package including a title and abstract for the panel, complete abstracts for three or four papers, names of contributing panelists, and panel themes or keywords. Further details are available below.
2. Invited Plenaries may be proposed to showcase the work of noted scholars and topics of special interest. Plenaries will cut across conference themes to be of interest to a large proportion of attendees. To enable anyone to attend, each plenary will be held with no parallel presentations. Plenary selection will be competitive; those not selected will be offered panel status as appropriate.
3. Individual Papers may be proposed for inclusion in existing panels or in panels organized by the conference committee. Please submit a title and abstract of 300 words explaining the paper’s argument, methods and relation to STS, along with several keywords describing the paper’s main themes.
4. Poster Presentations will be accepted for exhibition within an open conference space during the meetings. Please submit a title and abstract of 300 words explaining the poster’s argument, methods and relation to STS, along with several keywords describing the poster’s main themes.
Participation is limited to one paper/poster presentation and one additional, non-presentation role. Plenary speakers may also present an additional paper.
Conference registration fee is 350SGD. A limited number of fee waivers or bursaries may be available. Refundable cancellations are allowed until April 15, 2013.
Panel and Paper Submission Details A panel consists of time slots for up to four papers, or three papers plus a discussant, with additional time for open discussion. Please submit (1) an abstract of approximately 300 words explaining the panel and its relation to STS, (2) a list of names of panelists and their roles (organizer, paper presentation, moderator, discussant), (3) keywords describing the panel, and (4) the complete titles and abstracts of the contributing panelists. Panel organizers will also need to designate a moderator. A panel can have no more than four speakers per panel. Time allotted for papers is twenty minutes, with additional time for discussion.
