2012.12.17

MINISTRY OF ENVIRONMENT REPUBLIC OF KOREA

Korea Environment Corporation (KECO) under the Ministry of Environment announced on the 17th that the corporation successfully registered ‘waste compost programme’ in Sri Lanka as Programmatic Clean Development Mechanism (P-CDM) of UN.

The purpose of ‘Municipal Waste Compost Programme in Sri Lanka’ is composting organic compost which is treated in open-dumping landfill. The project is jointly implemented by KECO and Waste Management Authority of Western Province (WMA-WP).
It is a 28 year project and is expected that about average of 80 thousand tons of Certified Emission Reductions (CERs) per year be authorized by UN from 2014, if possible.
Economic value is calculated to be 480 million won for 80 thousand tons, adding up to 13.440 billion won in 28 years.

Including this programme, four projects in total are registered as P-CDM and it is the first time to register overseas P-CDM.
To work this out, KECO discovered the ‘Municipal Waste Compost Programme in Sri Lanka’ in 2010 through validation, concluded MOU with the Waste Management Authority of Western Province in Feb. 2011 and completed registration on Dec. 7, 2012.
Under the MOU, KECO registered the programme and prepared monitoring report and CERs approval and WMA and WP will operate and monitor the facility.

KECO is planning to lay groundwork for domestic private sector to enter overseas P-CDM and promote contributing in sustainable development of developing countries.
