IPCC Calls for Expert Review of Kyoto Protocol Methods and Good Practice Draft

7 January 2013: The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) is calling for experts to review the first order draft of its supplementary guidance on greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and removals from land use, land-use change and forestry (LULUCF) for reporting under the Kyoto Protocol.

According to the IPCC, the Draft document, known as the “2013 Revised Supplementary Methods and Good Practice Guidance Arising from the Kyoto Protocol,” was prepared by the IPCC’s Task Force on National Greenhouse Gas Inventories (TFI). This work came in response to an invitation by the parties to the Kyoto Protocol, who requested the IPCC review and update the Good Practice Guidance for LULUCF, which was issued in 2003, to ensure consistency with decisions agreed by the Conference of the Parties (COP) to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) in Durban, South Africa, in 2011.

The IPCC provides policymakers with robust scientific and technical data to inform climate policy and global climate negotiations. Draft reports generated by the IPCC undertake a multistage review, a process that begins with the review of a first order draft by scientific experts, followed by the review of a second order draft by governments and experts and a final round of government comments prior to the approval session of the IPCC.

Experts interested in taking part in this first review process can register online at the IPCC website. Registration is open until the end of the review period on 3 February 2013, and the Draft will be finalized at the end of October 2013.
