The Prime Minister has just approved the National Strategy on Biodiversity in 2020, with a vision to 2030. Accordingly, the Strategy aims to improve the quality and increase the area of protected natural ecosystems. The areas of nature reserve on land account for 9% of the territory, the area of the maritime nature reserve occupies 0.24% of the waters area, forest coverage reaches45%; old-growth forests remain 0.57 million hectares and are protected effectively.
Besides, mangrove forests, seagrass beds, coral reefs need to be maintained. 15% of degraded ecosystem will be restored. Nature Reserves including 10 Ramsar sites, 10 biosphere reserve and 10 ASEAN Heritage Parks are internationally recognized.
To achieve the above objectives, the Strategy targets to promote activities to strictly protect old-growth forests, implement measures to effectively prevent deforestation in order to protect natural forests, special-use forests, protected forests. On the other hand, natural ecosystems should be protected and the management mechanism of natural protected areas should be strengthened.
