From the Shallows to the Deep: Who is taking the lead? Women, Water and Leadership: A Workshop for Asia and the Pacific

This regional workshop, sponsored by the ADB Water and Gender Equity Communities of Practice and co-organized with the International Water Management Institute (IWMI), will provide informative and innovative discussion on female leadership within water and provide a platform for different parties to interact. It will explore and discuss how the water sector can better harness the talents of women to become leaders at all levels of the water sector and contribute to water security. Discussions will cover specific problems and constraints facing women to striving to take up leadership roles in water security and the possible solutions to overcome the challenges.

Objectives

The regional workshop aims to:

1. provide developing countries, development agencies, donors, civil society organizations and women with a regional platform where they may exchange best practices, knowledge and ideas about women and leadership in the water sector, and identify their joint priorities for the Asia and Pacific region, and;
2. identify strategies to fully use the potential of women as water leaders and to enhance the participation and visibility of female community leaders, experts and policy makers at all levels.

This workshop will also function as a regional meeting leading up to the Global Water and Gender Conference on Gender, Water, and Development – the untapped connection, to be held in South Africa, 2014. It is anticipated that issues of the region will be highlighted, and gain a functional place within the global debate on water and gender.

Target participants

The participants (50-60) will include government officials, NGO leaders from developing members of ADB, representatives from development agencies, donors, civil society organizations, women from community water groups, etc.
