BEC EnviroSeries Conference 2013
Sustainable Waste Management: Policies, Practices and Technologies
Waste is increasingly costly to our city, in terms of its treatment, disposal, missed business opportunities and what it costs the environment. High on Hong Kong’s sustainability agenda is the formulation and implementation of a long-term strategy to manage our waste. This calls for clear policies, strong public-private partnerships and participation of the community.
Solutions are by no means simple and in a single dimension. Landfill exhaustion is a reality Hong Kong is now facing, making waste management an imminent technical, social and political issue. Waste prevention and source separation, waste recycling and recovery should all be considered under a sustainable waste management strategy. In a small and highly populated place like Hong Kong, it is challenging to formulate a strategy that can tackle the pressing issue of municipal solid waste. While waste reduction and recycling rely heavily on the behaviour of society, it is important that we keep looking for new initiatives, technologies and infrastructure to deal with the situation, and enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of our waste handling measures.
In this Conference, BEC will line up a strong panel of experts and practitioners to share best practices and their insights on the policy framework, technologies, partnerships and practical steps that will help Hong Kong move forward on this critical issue.
The Conference looks to explore the following:

The Conference looks to explore the following:
- Policy agenda for holistic and sustainable waste management
- Economic instruments and integrated waste management strategies
- Beyond conventional waste treatment: case studies from abroad
- Future options for the management of solid waste in Hong Kong
- Latest waste management technologies and private sector proposals
We need simultaneous actions on all fronts and concerted effort in society as a whole to tackle our city’s waste issue. Let us look beyond the challenges ahead and see prospects in practicing sustainable waste management in Hong Kong.
