The Rio+20 United Nations (UN) Conference on Sustainable Development, held in June 2012, put in place the process of developing Sustainable Development Goals that will converge with the definition of the Post-2015 Millennium Development Goals. This new global agenda is expected to address interconnected global problems such as water, energy and food security as well as critical social needs including poverty eradication, gender equity, health and education.
Sustainability science, which is an emerging approach of problem-oriented and interdisciplinary scholarship, provides a useful tool, methodology and base to deal with this interconnectedness and integrate our knowledge from social and natural sciences into policies, strategies and plans.
The objectives of this joint UNU/IR3S/UNESCO symposium are to discuss the issues, concept, approach and methodologies of sustainability science to reframe it within the broad political agenda, and to explore ways to strengthen international collaboration for enhancing the science–policy–society interface. The symposium will bring together representatives from these key institutes, UNESCO member states, scholars and policymakers to discuss the state of the art of sustainability science for its application in sustainable development policy and action.
Simultaneous English–French interpretation will be provided.
