New Books: Frontiers of Environmental Input-Output Analysis By Shigemi Kagawa (30 Aug 2013)

Frontiers of Environmental Input-Output Analysis

By Shigemi Kagawa

Routledge – 2013
Descriptions:
Input-Output Analysis (IOA) is widely used in the field of ecological economics, industrial ecology, and environmental sciences. Industrial Ecology (IE) and Ecological Economics (EE) are promising and growing fields. IOA plays a crucial role in analyzing the related environmental and resource issues and providing quantitative information to many research questions and policy implications. The major aim of this book is to provide not only a comprehensive overview of environmental IOA from 1930s to the present but also the frontiers of environmental IOA including energy structural decomposition analysis, spatial energy structural decomposition analysis, multi-regional waste make-use analysis, augmented waste input-output analysis, dynamic structural decomposition analysis with product lifetime distributions, and endogenous input-output analysis with product lifetime distributions to professionals, practitioners, and students.
This book presents a novel dynamic structural decomposition analysis to evaluate the effects of the product lifetime shifts and structural changes such as technological changes and final demand shifts on the life cycle energy consumptions. It also contributes to modelling a simple social accounting method with cumulative product lifetime distributions and argues how product lifetime extension affects energy consumptions and income flow throughout the entire economic system.
The book demonstrates the author’s expertise in IOA and is an essential read for students and scholars in the field.

Contents:
  1. Introduction
  2. A Structural Decomposition of Energy Consumption Based on a Hybrid Rectangular Input-Output Framework
  3. A Spatial Structural Decomposition Analysis of the Chinese and Japanese Energy Demand
  4. An Empirical Analysis of Industrial Waste Embodied in the 1995 Japanese Economy
  5. A Simple Multi-Regional Input-Output Account for Waste Analysis
  6. Measuring Spatial Repercussion Effects
  7. Inter-Industry Analysis, Consumption Structure, and the Household Waste Production Structure
  8. The Economic and Environmental Consequences of Automobile Lifetime Extension and Fuel Economy Improvement
  9. Does Product Lifetime Extension Increase Our Income at the Expense of Energy Consumption?

Event: New Open Access Journal Now Accepting Submissions: Earth Perspectives – Transdisciplinarity Enabled (2 Apr 2013)

New Open Access Journal Now Accepting Submissions: Earth Perspectives – Transdisciplinarity Enabled

cda_displayimageEarth Perspectives – Transdisciplinarity Enabled focuses on publishing and promoting integrating approaches to research, analysis and prediction of the Earth System, including the role of humans that either contribute to and/or are affected by the Earth System variability and changes. The journal’s intent is to bring together rich scientific knowledge and experience residing within natural and social sciences and humanities towards developing solutions and best practices that can be used in addressing contemporary socioeconomic development challenges facing the nations around the world. This holistic approach to global sustainability requires a transdisciplinary research agenda to be enabled by the scholarly papers published in Earth Perspectives.
The journal will build on the scientific foundation established by the Earth System Sciences studies that have enabled a major focus on interactions among the major Earth system spheres (i.e. litho-, hydro-, bio-, atmosphere) which have increasingly improved our ability to assess the consequences of the complex interactions within and among these spheres. The global society needs better access to this scientific knowledge to inform social, economic and development decisions in light of a fast growing population, competition for natural resources, and frequent occurrence of extreme weather and climate events. The journal will foster such approach to research and provision of science-based information for decision-making with the aim to demonstrate the benefits of science and technology in serving the needs of society.
Earth Perspectives – Transdisciplinarity Enabled shall publish topics on Earth-Human interactions and their influence on major global cycles of water, energy, nutrients, ecosystems and associated services, environment, and health with a major focus on socioeconomic aspects and human decisions. The transdisciplinary approach is required to address complex environmental challenges by natural and social sciences with due consideration to economics. Innovative engineering solutions will benefit greatly the global sustainability agenda and bring about the societal transformations to meet the needs of current and future generation of Earth inhabitants.

Events: Sixth International Surface Ocean - Lower Atmosphere Study (SOLAS) Summer School, Xiamen, China (1 Feb 2013 Deadline for application)

Sixth International SOLAS Summer School, Xiamen, China

The SOLAS Summer School is a biennial international event that brings together over 70 students and 15 world-leading international scientists in a variety of fields, for a combination of lectures and practical workshops. It aims to teach the skills and knowledge of the many disciplines needed to understand the nature of ocean-atmosphere interactions. It allows doctoral students and early-career researchers to see how their work fits into the broad canvas of SOLAS, and global change research more generally.
The Summer School aims to  expose graduate students and young scientists to recent developments and methodologies in the study of biogeochemical and physical feedbacks between the ocean and atmosphere in a changing environment
The sixth summer school will be in Xiamen, China, from 23 August – 2 September 2013.
Deadline for application: 1 Feb 2013
