Event Date: 25 Mar 2014 Event Time: 9:00 am - 12:00 pm Venue: BEC Auditorium Fee: Free   ( By Invitation only ) Contact: Ms Jill Chow Email: jill@bec.org.hk
About the Event

Business Environment Council, with the support of The Rockefeller Foundation, organises this half-day workshop to explore and discuss the risks and opportunities that climate change events are creating for business in Asia.

As shown by the massive floods in Thailand in late 2011 that disrupted global supply chains and Super Typhoon Haiyan that devastated the Philippines, the frequency and intensity of major climate events is set to accelerate as the global climate system continues to change. This first of its kind event is facilitated by Ashvin Dayal, Associate Vice President & Managing Director, Asia of The Rockefeller Foundation, will take stock of current levels of business continuity and assess them against the reality of major climate events.
Through interactive scenarios and visioning exercises, participants with better understand their own organization’s resilience and the ways in which city-wide resilience efforts can impact their plans. Beyond preparedness, this workshop will also explore how businesses can develop new products or services that can be used by cities to respond to these challenges.

Event: Seminar on ISO 50001 Energy Management System (EnMS) and Certification (25 Feb 2014)

Seminar on ISO 50001 Energy Management System

(EnMS) and Certification

Event Date: 25 Feb 2014 Event Time: 2:15 pm - 5:05 pm

Business Environment Council is pleased to be a supporting organisation of Seminar on ISO 50001 Energy Management System (EnMS) and Certification organised by The Hong Kong Council for Testing and Certification and Hong Kong Accreditation Service.

About the Seminar
Climate change is a defining challenge of our time, affecting each and every one of us. For a more sustainable future, there is a need for community-wide action to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.
In Hong Kong, electricity generation is a major source of GHG emissions, accounting for over 60% of the total local emissions. Close to 90% of our city’s electricity is consumed in buildings. A concerted effort across different sectors to maximise energy efficiency in buildings will help to combat climate change. In 2011, the International Organisation for Standardisation released ISO 50001 as a globally accepted framework for energy management. This international standard is applicable to organisations of all sizes
and sectors for setting up a suitable energy management system (EnMS). With an ISO 50001-based EnMS, an organisation can measure and monitor its energy use, identify where to improve energy efficiency, and take actions accordingly. Not only will it lead to operational cost savings, it will also help to enhance market competitiveness.

Third-party certification to ISO 50001 is one step further – ensuring the organisation’s compliance of its EnMS with international standard and demonstrating a commitment to environmental sustainability. Some localcertification bodies have started offering ISO 50001 EnMS certification services nowadays in response to market needs.
Promoting joint effort in enhancing energy efficiency for a “low-carbon” Hong Kong, this seminar will bring together various local experts to share the concepts of ISO 50001 EnMS and relevant certification as well as
some success stories.

Details of the Seminar
Date: 25 February 2014 (Tuesday)
Time: 2:15 p.m. to 5:05 p.m.
Venue: Conference Hall, 4/F, HKPC Building, 78 Tat Chee Avenue, Kowloon Tong, Hong Kong

"Preserving our Valuable Water Resource – Preventive and Proactive"
Speaker: Mr Antoine Mussillon
Managing Director, Veolia Water (South China) Limited
Water is a limited vital natural resource that is essential to our daily living and also heavily relied on by all businesses.  Seventy per cent of the earth surface is covered by water, but for it to continue to be a reliable supply for future growth, it must be available to local populations in sufficient quantity and quality, and without compromising local ecosystems.
Unfortunately, this is not the case in most of the world, as water is unevenly distributed among the world’s population.  Population growth, urbanisation and changing lifestyle are now putting pressure and competition on water resources.  Sustainable water management is a pressing need for many developed and developing economies to prepare for tomorrow’s need.
Water management has a direct impact on countries and company’s economic performance and growth. Proactive water management is therefore vital.  Veolia Environnement is going to share an overview of the situation and what we could do to reduce our water footprint.
"Application of Genetic Algorithm for On-line Optimisation of Pumping Schedules"
Speakers:  Mr H S Wong, Assistant Director / Mechanical & Electrical
Mr Charles Y Y Law, Electrical Engineer
Water Supplies Department, the HKSAR Government
As energy is needed for the supply of water to customers, the efficient use of this resource is a common concern of the water industry. The Water Supplies Department of the HKSAR Government has developed an optimisation methodology for on-line pump scheduling as one of its energy management opportunities. Using the experience of putting the new initiative on trial in a pilot scheme, the speakers will share with our members how engineers of different generations can join hands to bring about changes to the way we used to deliver services and keep the momentum of energy saving rolling.

Shaping Hong Kong’s cleaner energy future will require a holistic view in our energy management approach. Continuous effort in deploying advanced technologies, reducing the reliance on fossil fuels and switching to cleaner fuels on the supply side will remain as a key to reduce emissions. Equally important is maximising demand-side opportunities through enhancing energy efficiency and conservation practice in both the public and private sectors.

It is widely recognised that the potentials in smart grid, fuel efficient transport, waste-to-energy and energy efficiency are massive. Yet, the adoption and progress is far from satisfaction. Economics concerns, misguided perceptions and complexity of consumer behaviour are acting as stumbling blocks to convert intent into actions. It will take a collective effort and leadership at all levels in our society to move things further. - See more at: http://bec.org.hk/events/enviroseries-conference#sthash.IfElY4qn.dpuf
The growing demand for energy to support our city’s continuous development, combined with a need to reduce our emissions and sustain the environment, has increased the focus on cleaner energy. High on the sustainability agenda is the formulation of a long-term and environmentally sustainable energy strategy that enables Hong Kong to stay ahead of future challenges. This calls for clear policies, cross-sector collaborations and social innovation.
