You can now visit up-close and personal some of the world's most imperiled ecosystems on Google Earth: coral reefs. The Google team is working with scientists to provide 360 degree panoramas, similar to Google street-view, to give armchair ecologists a chance to experience the most biodiverse ecosystems under the waves.

"Only 1% of humanity has ever dived on a coral reef and by making the experience easily accessible the survey will help alert millions of people around the world to the plight of coral reefs," says Ove Hoegh-Guldberg with the University of Queensland. Hoegh-Guldberg heads the Catlin Seaview Survey which brings cameras mounted to a manned vehicle to photograph the reefs. Last year the team did around 30 surveys in the Great Barrier Reef region, while this year they have expanded to the Caribbean.

But the technology has other potential beyond education and appreciation. Researchers hope to employ citizen scientists to identify marine species via images, helping to catalogue biodiversity on embattled reefs.

Coral reefs are threatened by pollution, coastal development, on-land deforestation, and overfishing. However the largest threat to coral reefs is burning fossil fuels, which is pushing marine temperatures up and causing to ocean acidification.

"Our results show that even under the most moderate climate change projections from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, most corals will struggle to survive and reefs will rapidly decalcify," says Hoegh-Guldberg, who is running a longterm project in Australia that measures how corals respond to rising temperatures and acidification in controlled conditions.

This conference aims to showcase and discuss advanced measures and researches on climate change and coral reef conservation in small islands, and to propose the features of a sustainable island in harmony with nature to the international audience.

According to the survey
 results conducted by Coral Working Group Subcommittee of the project Global Environment Facility (GEF), Vietnam has about 1.222km2 coral reefs, which are widely distributed from north to south, with a largest area of high biological diversity in the Central and South Vietnam. Studies of coral has recorded nearly 400 species of coral reefs in the Gulf of Nha Trang, Ninh Thuan, and Con Dao. According to scientists, based on the number of coral species that has been discovered, the group can confirm that Vietnam's coral species belong to the most diverse coral group in the world.

In Nha Trang alone, there are around 340 coral species, accounting for about 40% of the world's coral species. Coral reefs here are of international importance and the highest biodiversity of its kind in Vietnam. Despite economic development pressure, Nha Trang retains some intact coral reefs of Vietnam. However, coral reefs are facing many threats by overexploitation and environmental pollution.

In order to manage, protect and develop the biodiversity in Nha Trang Bay, in which the most important is coral reefs, Khanh Hoa province has established the Hon Mun Marine Protected Area (MPA) in 2001. This protected area covers an area of about 160 km2, including 38 km2 of land and 122 km2 of sea surface. This is the first marine protected area of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam. The goal of the MPA is to protect marine biodiversity and help communities in the island to improve their living condition and with other stakeholders to protect and effectively manage marine biodiversity of Nha Trang Bay and made models of MPA management with the participation of the people in Vietnam.

Recently, the People's Committee of Khanh Hoa Province has selected two Studies on building artificial reefs in Nha Trang Bay to perform in 2013 with the desire to protect fisheries and renewable sources and restore coral site for tourism.

The first study was to create artificial reef types in accordance with the natural conditions, the environment and fishery resources in the waters of Nha Trang Bay. Thereby it will provide the scientific basis for artificial reefs to the local manager selection and application of the model to protect the lobsters in the wild and aquatic resources, ecosystems, and habitats of other marine creatures.

This study is being funded with an estimated amount of 900 million from the science fund and will be completed in two years, with the requirements set out for the scientists to select the appropriate location, the design for 2 - 3 types of artificial suitable management model. This model will be the basis for the replication and installation of artificial reefs in Nha Trang Bay, to meet the above objectives.

The second study is determined to be deployed in Cape Bang Thang, Northwest of Hon Tre, Nha Trang Bay with the goal of establishing artificial reefs associated with reef restoration, landscaping for diving and minimize waves in beaches of Nha Trang Bay. The funding for this study is estimated at about 950 million and will also be completed in two years from 2013. Khanh Hoa Department of Science and Technology will implement necessary steps to select units and individuals to perform the above two studies.
